Airline services: Complex z/OS upgrade

B & M provided MVS services to an Airline Services provider to complete the upgrade of eight systems from OS/390 to z/OS, within a closely defined timescale

Project duration - 7.5 months

Project scope
- Complete the roll out of z/OS across eight systems, five of which are Sysplex
- Upgrade StorageTek software SVAA and HSC as a prerequisite for the z/OS roll out
- Build test beds /systems for evaluation before implementation
- Implement a shared HFS across all systems
- Exploit the features offered with the new release of z/OS
- Investigate WLC and initiate pricing analysis to see if cost savings could be achieved

Results
- Exploitation of new /enhanced features through the successful upgrade of eight systems to z/OS within the project time scale 
- Increased protection of production environments through the use of Operating Systems Test facilities
- Project created and proved a process for subsequent upgrades which minimised risk and user disruption and positioned the customer correctly for upgrades to CICS and DB2
- Significant reduction of the Unix System Services DASD requirement from eight to one HFS root structures
- Improvement in control of HFS
- Exploitation of new /enhanced features of z/OS such as the definition and implementation of SYS1.LOGREC writing to a data stream (both CF structure and DASD)
- Disregarded WLC pricing as being less cost effective than existing PSLC pricing
